Part 1: 2 Considerations for Office Installation Projects in Historical Buildings

An office with two long tables facing an exposed brick wall with 2 whiteboards

Canada’s historical buildings can offer some of the most incredible architectural and aesthetic appeal imaginable.  It’s really no surprise that many companies forgo new construction and move their offices into older buildings.  After all, there’s ambiance and history that simply cannot exist in a new build.  Of course, office installation projects in these types of buildings do require that all service providers working on the job understand the realities and challenges.

In our two part series, we’ll cover some of the main aspects that have to be recognized during office installation projects coordinated on sites that were built 50+ years ago below.

#1:  Many older buildings have not been retrofitted with elevators.

Because an older property is unlikely to have an elevator, any office installation projects that take place on the second, third or higher levels must be handled carefully.  The treatment of all items coming into the building must be planned meticulously.  Creativity and experience is useful to determine the best ways to ensure a safe, perfect finished product.

#2:  Older buildings frequently have no loading docks.

On “new construction” or “under construction” properties, it’s common for loading docks to be accessible.  These docks help with easier and more efficient transportation of office installation materials.  Without loading docks, service providers have to rely on other entrances and exits to ensure that all products make their way in and out of the property.
